Dosage Usage and Side Effects of Acetaminophen Suppositories

Suppositories are useful for those who cannot keep the medicine down. They vomit the drug because of its unpleasant taste. In these cases, the use of Acetaminophen suppositories will help. Acetaminophen helps relieve mild pain and headaches and helps reduce fever. It will help people suffering from arthritis and those having colds and toothaches.

Recommended Dosage for Acetaminophen

As for the dosage, this is not meant for children under 12 years of age. For those older than that and adults, you can use one suppository every 4 to 6 hours. Make sure you do not take more than six suppositories in a day (24 hour period). You must take the medicine at the first sign of pain. Do NOT wait until the pain becomes worse because then the effect of the medicine will decrease. Also, do not use this medicine for fever for more than 3 days unless you have the doctor’s advice to use it.

Be Careful Not to Overdose

Do not use the Acetaminophen suppositories more than its recommended dose. An overdose will damage the liver and might also cause death. Also, do not take acetaminophen if you are allergic to it. If you take more than three alcoholic drinks a day, you may not be able to take this medication. Always get the advice of a doctor before taking medication.

Consult the Doctor if Pregnant

For pregnant women, the physician will determine whether the use of rectal medication is safe first. If you are pregnant, get the advice of the doctor first. For children, use the pediatric form of the suppository. Make sure you wash your hands both before and after inserting the suppository.

Use of Glycerin Suppositories

Glycerin suppositories are rectal laxatives used for relieving mild constipation. We insert these into the back passage and leave it for 10 minutes. During this time, the suppository will dissolve and release the medication into the body. The Glycerin suppositories will take effect within 15 – 40 minutes. Lie down on your side and insert the stiff suppository into the rectum. Chill it in a refrigerator if it is not stiff.
